The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has reportedly questioned the former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mr. Mele Kyari, as part of an investigation into alleged procurement irregularities and financial improprieties that have drawn public attention.

Sources say the interrogation focused on contracts, procurement processes, and withdrawals linked to the operations of state-owned companies under his watch. Officials from the anti-graft agency declined to comment on specifics, citing the sensitivity of an ongoing probe, but said the questioning is part of standard investigative procedures to establish facts and preserve evidence.

Mr. Kyari’s legal representatives told reporters that he has cooperated with investigators and maintained his willingness to provide documentation and testimony to clarify any outstanding issues. “My client is committed to cooperating fully with the authorities and expects the process to be objective and fair,” his counsel said.

Energy sector observers noted that scrutiny of leadership at national oil entities has intensified amid public demands for accountability in the petroleum value chain. The EFCC’s inquiries form part of a broader push to ensure transparency in the management of public resources and to address corruption risk in major national corporations.

The EFCC has not yet indicated whether the investigation will result in charges. Meanwhile, stakeholders called for swift, evidence-based conclusions so that governance in the sector can proceed with clarity and confidence
