CIVIL SOCIETY GROUP DEMANDS PROBE INTO FUEL IMPORT

Renewed Hope Afenifere Concerned Supporters and Energy Reforms Advocates of Nigeria, a prominent civil society organization, has expressed deep concerns over the continued importation of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), despite claims by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPCL) that local refining has improved.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos, the group’s convener, Isijola Shola, alleged that over 489,065 metric tonnes of petrol and diesel were imported in January 2025, with NNPCL reportedly responsible for 72.25% of the volume. This, he argued, contradicted the company’s assertion that it had ceased fuel imports.

Shola called on President Bola Tinubu to launch an independent investigation into the activities of NNPCL, stating, “We have lost confidence in the current leadership of NNPCL. They have not acted in the best interest of Nigerians.” He urged the president to safeguard his administration’s integrity by addressing the issue decisively.

The group further criticized the NNPCL’s claims of boosting refining capacity, insisting that their evidence pointed to continued dependency on foreign imports, which undermines economic reforms
