HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES TO RESUME PLENARY ,UNVEIL MIDTERM LEGISLATIVE REPORT AND NEW PRIORITIES

The House of Representatives will resume plenary sessions Today Tuesday, May 6, 2025, following a legislative recess that coincided with national holidays including Easter, Eid-el-Fitr, and Workers’ Day. Speaker Tajudeen Abbas is expected to deliver a comprehensive address outlining the House’s legislative priorities for the remainder of its session.
The resumption comes at a critical juncture, with the 10th Assembly preparing to mark its midterm in June. A highlight of the coming weeks will be the Inaugural National Policy Dialogue on the Legislative Agenda, scheduled for May 12, during which the Speaker will present a midterm report and lead discussions with government officials, civil society, and international partners.
During the recess, legislative activities did not grind to a halt. Delegations visited Enugu and Plateau States to support communities affected by recent violence. The House also made significant strides in public finance oversight, with the Public Accounts Committee announcing the recovery of ₦11.49 billion from oil and gas firms—bringing total debt recoveries to over ₦61.5 billion since March.
The House also pressed ahead with constitutional and electoral reform. A technical retreat was held to harmonise memoranda and prepare for zonal hearings on constitutional amendment bills. Reforms to the Electoral Act 2022 are also on the agenda to close legal gaps ahead of future elections.
Plenary this week will feature motions on critical national issues including:
• Electricity debts by MDAs and military agencies
• Fuel importation and domestic refining
• Subsidising cancer treatment
• Housemanship for medical students
• Expansion of NYSC camps and JAMB CBT centres
• Universal basic education enforcement
• Comprehensive audit of abandoned public buildings
As it resumes, the House has reaffirmed its commitment to robust oversight, impactful legislation, and people-centered representation.
