GOVERNOR BALA MOHAMMED DONATES N95M TO FAMILIES OF HUNTERS, CIVILIANS KILLED IN BAUCHI BANDIT ATTACK
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed on Thursday May 15th announced a N95 million compensation package for the families of 23 hunters and civilians killed during a bandit ambush in Alkaleri LGA on May 4. The victims, including 13 hunters and 10 civilians, were attacked while patrolling the Duguri–Mansur–Dajin Madam forest corridor, a hotspot straddling Bauchi and Plateau states.
The governor made the announcement during a condolence visit to the affected families, flanked by top government and security officials. Each family of the slain hunters will receive N5 million, while each civilian’s family will receive N3 million. An additional N20 million was pledged to support local hunters still active in the area.
“This was a serious test. While we lost some of our people, over 60 bandits were neutralised. This underscores the courage of our vigilantes and security agencies,” Governor Mohammed said.
He also disclosed plans to recruit and train 2,100 new vigilantes across Bauchi State, with a starting batch of 300 to 500 from conflict-prone communities, promising a minimum wage of ₦70,000 and training under security agencies.
Governor Mohammed further appealed for help from the Federal Government, revealing that he had consulted with NSA Nuhu Ribadu and Senator Shehu Buba Umar for additional security support. He also urged community leaders to identify and expose informants who assist bandits from within.
Bauchi State Police Commissioner (represented by DCP Muhammad Hassan Ahmed) acknowledged the gravity of the attack and pledged closer collaboration between law enforcement and local stakeholders to restore safety in the region.
