FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DEPLOYS ACCOUNTABILITY OFFICERS TO 774 LGAs
In a sweeping accountability initiative, the Federal Government has deployed Performance and Financial Management Officers (PFMOs) to all 774 local government areas to improve transparency in the use of Basic Healthcare Provision Funds (BHCPF). Speaking at the national flag-off of the onboarding training in Abuja, Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Muyi Aina, said the PFMOs, many of whom are young Nigerians, are embedded within local primary healthcare systems to monitor financial flows and service delivery. The initiative complements ongoing reforms by President Tinubu to revitalise primary healthcare, including the retraining of over 60,700 health workers and the upgrading of facilities with solar power and new infrastructure. Aina explained that funding now flows through four BHCPF gateways involving the NPHCDA, National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), states, and LGAs. He also linked the PFMO programme to the newly launched Health Fellows scheme targeting youth engagement in healthcare governance. The programme rollout is occurring simultaneously across all 36 states and the FCT.
