EDO GOVERNOR DEPLOYS TECHNICAL TEAM TO STUDY FLOOD CONTROL MODELS IN AKWA IBOM, RIVERS STATES

In a decisive bid to end decades of seasonal devastation wrought by floods across Edo State, Governor Monday Okpebholo has commissioned a special technical team to understudy the successful flood mitigation strategies of Akwa Ibom and Rivers states. This move, the governor explained, reflects his governance style — pragmatic, solution-driven, and informed by evidence-based models.
According to a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, the governor’s directive mandates the team, comprising experts from four specialized environmental and hydrology firms, to embark on an on-the-ground feasibility assessment of flooding patterns, drainage infrastructure, and topographic challenges, especially in Benin City and surrounding communities.
Governor Okpebholo noted that the two referenced states have successfully turned around their flood management stories through innovative engineering and environmental resilience models, making them ideal benchmarks. “This visit is timed to coincide with the peak of the rainy season so that our experts can witness the realities as they happen. We want real-time data, not outdated templates,” he stated.
The experts will conduct environmental assessments, analyze flood-prone flashpoints, and propose a sustainable solution that addresses both surface and underground drainage systems. Their comprehensive report will be submitted to the governor for final review before the state begins implementation after the heavy rains subside.
As part of this exercise, Governor Okpebholo has issued a firm warning: any property — residential or commercial — obstructing waterways will be demolished. He stressed that the state cannot sacrifice public safety and long-term development for illegal structures. However, owners of properties with verified legal titles will receive compensation, while others will be resettled appropriately.
“This is not a cosmetic project or a political stunt. Every naira allocated will be accounted for. We’re driven by data, science, and empathy for the people of Edo. This intervention is about saving lives and safeguarding our cities for generations to come,” the statement emphasized.
The initiative, according to government sources, is part of a broader environmental resilience agenda that includes erosion control, urban renewal, and community sensitization on waste disposal practices. The governor restated his commitment to make Benin City and its environs resilient, livable, and economically attractive in line with his vision to reposition Edo State as a modern, environmentally conscious territory.
