Nigerian comedian and social commentator, Efe Warriboy, has condemned the declaration of a public holiday in Benue State to welcome President Bola Tinubu. The holiday, announced for Wednesday, June 18, was meant to honor the president’s first visit to the state—but came just days after hundreds were murdered in a suspected herdsmen attack in Yelewata.
In an emotional video posted to Instagram, Warriboy criticized Governor Hyacinth Alia for what he described as insensitivity and political bootlicking. “What kind of leader tells his grieving people to leave their mourning and come out to cheer for a politician?” he asked. “It’s disgraceful. A man said in a viral video that he lost 20 relatives. Instead of mourning with them, you’re laying red carpets for a presidential visit.”
Warriboy also attacked the hypocrisy of Nigeria’s political class, stating that even clergy-turned-politicians like Alia become corrupted by power. “Whether you are a Reverend Father or a bishop, once you hold political power in Nigeria, a demon enters you,” he said. His impassioned critique resonated with many Nigerians frustrated by what they see as performative governance and indifference to human suffering.
