The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF Nigeria) has unveiled its Wellness Center in Makurdi, offering free screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) alongside a range of holistic wellness services.
Dr. John Ugboji, Senior Regional Medical Manager for AHF Nigeria, described the Center as a “one‑stop shop” for STI care and general health support. He explained that since 2011 AHF has operated HIV services in Benue, and later extended its mandate to address community needs around STIs—highlighting the gap in attention to curable infections among sexually active populations.
Although operations began in December 2024, the official public launch was held this week. Available Monday to Friday (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and limited Saturdays, all services are provided at zero cost—from counselling and testing to treatment. Additionally, the Center offers free cervical cancer screening for eligible women, family planning, menstrual health management, condom distribution, and sanitary pad support for young girls.
Located strategically on George Akume Way near student and trade hubs, the facility has served over 2,500 clients since opening. Dr. Ugboji, who also coordinates AHF programs in Benue, celebrated the dramatic decline in HIV prevalence in the state—from 15.7 % to 3.4 %—expressing optimism for full elimination by 2030.
Steve Aborishade, AHF Marketing and Advocacy Manager, urged the population to normalize seeking care, emphasizing stigma-free access: “There’s nothing wrong with seeking treatment. People should be free and proud to approach treatment.”
Medical Director Dr. Emmanuel Nwabueze stated that patients need not have an STI to access services, and confirmed plans to open additional centers in Gboko and other areas to extend reach and generate youth employment.
Benue State Action Committee on AIDS (BENSACA) Acting Executive Secretary, Wanngo Titus, endorsed the initiative, calling on residents to fully leverage the Center’s services. Community testimonials and traditional ruler praises underscored the positive reception and expected impact on public health outcomes.
