Security personnel at the Kainji Power Plant in Niger State have been implicated in a large-scale theft of materials valued at approximately ₦4.8 billion. The suspects, including 12 security guards and supervisors Shaibu Abu Sufyan and Ibrahim Musa, allegedly conspired to steal metal beams and other navigation lock equipment from the facility. Investigations revealed that the stolen materials were sold to scrap dealers, compromising plant operations.
The discovery followed an internal inspection which highlighted substantial discrepancies in inventory records and damage to the plant’s storage facilities. The stolen materials, essential for plant maintenance and safety operations, posed a serious risk to the facility’s functionality. Plant management reported the theft to the police, triggering an immediate security and law enforcement response.
The Niger State Police Command has taken over the investigation, transferring the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department. Police officials confirmed that the suspects are in custody and are being interrogated to ascertain the full extent of the conspiracy. The power plant continues operations under heightened security protocols to prevent further breaches.
