As the nationwide strike by lecturers re-ignites pressure on the university system, the House of Representatives has announced plans to intervene in the impasse between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government.
The House leadership issued a statement saying it will convene an emergency session to mediate discussions, possibly setting up a joint panel to fast-track dialogue and resolution. The intervention aims to minimize academic disruption and protect students from prolonged shutdowns.
ASUU’s demands remain unresolved: full implementation of existing agreements, improved funding, salary arrears, and assurances of autonomy. The government, for its part, has maintained its “no work, no pay” policy.
Lawmakers expressed concern over the mounting impact on students, degree timelines, and university operations. They called on both parties to resume talks urgently and avoid punishing students for systemic failures.
