Lagos has earned international applause for successfully hosting the first-ever African edition of the E1 World Championship — the world’s leading electric powerboat racing series — which concluded earlier this month on the Lagos Lagoon.
The two-day event, held from October 4 to 5, featured elite teams from across the world competing in high-speed, environmentally friendly hydrofoil boats. Team Brazil emerged victorious after a thrilling final, while thousands of spectators lined the waterfront to witness the historic spectacle.
The Lagos State Government, in partnership with E1 organizers, turned the Marina and Victoria Island corridors into bustling festival zones filled with fan activities, music, and technology showcases. Hotels reported near-full occupancy, with restaurants and local businesses recording a significant boost in patronage throughout the weekend.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who attended the closing ceremony, praised the event as a landmark for Lagos’ global image. “This championship proves that Lagos can host world-class sporting events while promoting sustainability and innovation,” he said.
Event organizers confirmed that Lagos would remain on the E1 global calendar as a strategic stop for future editions, given the success of the 2025 debut. Talks are ongoing to expand the event’s footprint to include youth development programs and maritime technology partnerships in subsequent years.
