The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately act to halt an ongoing wave of resignations at federal universities, describing the trend as harmful to academic stability and student learning.
ASUU leaders said in a statement that numerous academic staff have tendered resignations or sought early retirement because of poor remuneration, dilapidated facilities, unpaid allowances, and a perceived lack of government commitment to revitalising higher education. The union warned that continued departures would weaken course delivery, research output and accreditation status of programmes.
The union demanded urgent interventions including accelerated implementation of funding commitments, improved infrastructure repairs, resolution of pension and promotion disputes, and clearer long-term plans for university autonomy and funding. ASUU also called for a renewed dialogue channel with the Ministry of Education and the Federal Government to agree a roadmap for sustainable recovery.
Students’ representatives and parents expressed concern, urging swift government action to safeguard academic sessions and ensure that the quality of tertiary education does not deteriorate further.
