A senior All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain has appealed to both the federal government and union leaders to resolve the ongoing university lecturers’ dispute quickly, warning that a prolonged strike would tarnish the administration’s record on education and human capital development. The party leader urged compromise and a phased approach to funding demands.
He urged the government to prioritise key negotiated items and for unions to show flexibility on timing and sequencing of payments, proposing an independent technical committee to audit claims and propose an implementable timetable. The chieftain argued that protecting academic calendars and students’ futures must be a shared priority.
Union representatives, however, insisted that unsustainable underfunding and delayed payments cannot be left unresolved for the sake of expediency. Observers called for continued talks and suggested targeted short-term measures to restart classes while longer fiscal arrangements are negotiated.
