Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has directed citizens across the state to observe three days of fasting and prayer as part of efforts to curb the resurgence of terrorist attacks in rural communities.
During a security briefing, the governor cited recent ambushes and increased movement of insurgent cells as indicators that the threat level has risen. He urged residents — regardless of religion — to participate in the spiritual exercise, saying that Borno’s long years of conflict require both “human effort and divine support.”
Zulum emphasized that the spiritual exercise does not replace security operations. Troops and civilian volunteers will intensify clearance missions, surveillance patrols, and intelligence gathering during the same period. The governor credited past spiritual interventions for moments of relative peace in the state.
Community leaders, clerics, and youth groups have welcomed the call, describing it as a unifying gesture in a state where conflict has fractured many communities.
