Six peacekeepers killed in Sudan drone strike honoured at UN ceremony in Kadugli

The United Nations has paid tribute to six peacekeepers killed in a drone strike in Sudan, during a solemn memorial ceremony held in Kadugli, the capital of South Kordofan State.

The peacekeepers, who were serving under the UN mission, lost their lives while carrying out duties aimed at protecting civilians amid Sudan’s ongoing conflict. UN officials described the attack as a stark reminder of the growing dangers faced by international personnel operating in volatile environments marked by the increasing use of drones and advanced weaponry.

At the ceremony, senior UN representatives and local officials honoured the fallen peacekeepers for their sacrifice and reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting peace efforts and civilian protection in Sudan, despite escalating security risks. Flags were lowered and moments of silence observed in remembrance of those killed.

The incident has renewed calls within the UN system for stronger safeguards for peacekeeping forces and accountability for attacks on international personnel, which are considered violations of international law. As fighting continues across parts of Sudan, the deaths underscore the human cost of the conflict and the precarious conditions under which peacekeepers operate.
