Umuahia, Abia — Hon. Kelechi Anderson Akaliro, member representing Umuahia North State Constituency, has officially left the All Progressives Congress (APC) and joined the Labour Party (LP), citing feelings of exclusion and internal strife within APC as motivating factors.
Akaliro, who chairs the House Committee on Public Petitions and Judiciary, explained that though elected under the APC banner, he has been largely sidelined by party leadership. He pointed to lack of invitations to meetings, exclusion from party decisions, and factionalism as evidence the party could no longer support his work for his constituency.
In his justification for joining LP, Akaliro praised Governor Alex Choma-Otti’s administration as “visionary and development-oriented,” noting progress in education, infrastructure, and social welfare under LP’s leadership in Abia State. He said many constituents share his view.
The defection is seen by analysts as another blow to APC’s already weakened standing in Abia State, while strengthening LP’s influence ahead of coming elections.
