AKPABIO CALLS POPULATION FIGURE CONFUSION A ‘NATIONAL EMBARRASSMENT,’ DEMANDS FRESH CENSUS
Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for a new national census to end years of conflicting population estimates and poor national planning.
Speaking during a visit from the National Population Commission (NPC), Akpabio described the varying figures often quoted—ranging from 220 million to over 300 million—as a national embarrassment. He emphasized that accurate data is essential for building infrastructure, planning education, and ensuring sustainable development.
Nigeria’s last census was conducted in 2006. Akpabio pledged full legislative support for the upcoming exercise, calling it a foundational step in future-proofing the country. NPC Chairman, Nasir Isa Kwarra, echoed his concerns and promised a thorough and credible count.
