Amnesty International has called for an independent investigation into allegations of sexual harassment leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
In a statement on X, Amnesty International Nigeria’s Director, Isa Sanusi, stressed the need for a fair and transparent inquiry, warning that failure to investigate could promote a culture of impunity.
Akpoti-Uduaghan accused Akpabio of sidelining her in Senate activities after she rejected his alleged advances. The Senate, however, suspended her for alleged misconduct, a move Amnesty International condemned.
Sanusi emphasized that dismissing the allegations without proper scrutiny could discourage victims from speaking out and embolden perpetrators of sexual harassment in political and professional spaces.
