Aspirants demand rotation of Council Chair Positions ahead of Edo 2026 LG Polls

Ahead of the 2026 Local Government elections in Edo State, political aspirants across parties are calling for the rotation of council chairmanship positions to promote fairness and balance across senatorial districts.

Stakeholders from Edo South, Central and North said rotational power sharing would help reduce political domination by larger local governments and give smaller communities access to leadership.

Party chieftains have also urged the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) to enforce internal democracy in party primaries and ensure gender inclusion.

A former council chairman from Edo North, Joseph Abu, said, “Rotation is not just political fairness — it builds unity and discourages marginalisation.”

Discussions are ongoing in several party caucuses to adopt a rotation framework before primaries begin. Analysts say the demand reflects growing political awareness at the grassroots and a desire for inclusive governance beyond party lines.
