The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced the suspension of a planned two-week warning strike following fresh meetings with federal government representatives. Union leaders said the decision to suspend action came after constructive engagements that yielded assurances on ongoing negotiations over unresolved demands, including funding for universities, outstanding promotion arrears and implementation of previous agreements.
ASUU officials said they will maintain channels of communication with the Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders while monitoring progress on agreed timelines. The union called on members to return to classrooms and resume academic activities immediately, urging university authorities to cooperate fully to limit disruption to the academic calendar and protect students’ welfare.
The suspension is conditional and temporary, ASUU warned, stressing that it expects concrete steps from the federal government within the agreed period. The union also pledged to reconvene and review the situation should the government fail to honour commitments or move slowly on the issues raised during talks.
