AUSTRALIAN WOMAN ACCUSED OF TERRORISM PLEADS GUILTY IN UK COURT

An Australian woman, Melanie Hutson, pleaded guilty at a London court to terrorism-related charges linked to the Islamic State (IS).

Hutson, 29, admitted to being part of an IS cell and distributing extremist materials online. Prosecutors said she played a role in radicalization networks that operated across Europe and Asia, targeting vulnerable young recruits.

She was arrested earlier this year in the UK following a joint intelligence operation involving British and Australian security agencies. The court heard that Hutson used encrypted messaging platforms to disseminate propaganda and coordinate logistics.

While sentencing is expected in the coming weeks, legal experts say she could face a lengthy prison term under UK counter-terrorism laws. Her case has reignited debate in Australia about the repatriation and prosecution of citizens who joined IS abroad.

Authorities stress that international cooperation remains vital in tackling terrorism, especially as extremist groups increasingly rely on digital platforms for recruitment.
