Enugu State is reportedly undergoing an unusual shortage of brooms in the wake of Governor Peter Mbah’s announced defection to the APC, prompting a boom in broom sales across markets.
Investigations revealed that many established broom sellers have sold out their stocks, while new entrants into the trade are seeing rapid turnover as defectors prepare for political rallies. Brooms are symbolic for the APC, and many defectors intend to carry them at public events.
One trader, Obinna Maduagwu, told reporters he had made “serious money” since news broke of the governor’s move. He and others expressed gratitude to Governor Mbah, seeing his defection as a blessing for their business.
Mrs. Ifeoma Obigeri, another broom vendor at Kenyatta Market, said her stock was completely sold by morning, as many buyers from the APC women’s wing cleared them all for upcoming events.
The scarcity has had political overtones: many PDP members expected to follow Mbah’s lead are reportedly preparing to carry brooms during their defection ceremonies, thereby intensifying demand.
