Edo State has been ranked among Nigeria’s top performers in health budget implementation, according to a new fiscal transparency report by BudgIT.
The report, titled “Tracking Health Investment in States 2024–2025,” assessed how state governments released and utilised funds allocated to health programmes. Edo scored over 78 percent on its budget implementation index, placing it in the top five nationwide.
BudgIT said Edo’s performance was driven by consistent funding of primary healthcare revitalisation, health worker incentives, and maternal health programmes.
Officials in the Edo Ministry of Health welcomed the rating, saying it reflects years of reform and prudent spending. Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samuel Aigbiremwen, said, “We have deliberately prioritised health infrastructure, workforce training, and drug supply chains.”
Civil society groups have urged the state to sustain transparency by publishing quarterly spending reports and ensuring rural communities also benefit from the improved funding.
