COURT SENTENCES LATE GOSPEL SINGER OSINACHI’S HUSBAND TO DEATH

In a historic judgment that resonated far beyond the courtroom, an FCT High Court sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of culpable homicide.
The trial, which began in June 2022, exposed a chilling pattern of domestic abuse masked behind a public image of religiosity and musical success. Seventeen witnesses — including two of the couple’s children — testified against Nwachukwu, painting a harrowing portrait of spousal battery, intimidation, and cruelty that ultimately culminated in Osinachi’s death.
Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme ruled that the prosecution had overwhelmingly proved that Nwachukwu’s actions caused his wife’s death. Besides the death sentence on the homicide charge, Nwachukwu received multiple prison terms and fines for other counts, including child cruelty and intimidation.
The case, one of Nigeria’s most closely watched domestic violence trials, has sparked renewed public discourse around the urgent need for stronger protections for victims of abuse and has set a major legal precedent in the fight against domestic violence.
