The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has officially launched a new automated cargo clearance system aimed at reducing bottlenecks at ports and enhancing transparency in trade facilitation. The system, unveiled at the Apapa Customs Command, is expected to significantly cut down clearance time and eliminate human interference in cargo processing.
Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, explained that the platform integrates real-time data verification, electronic payment processing, and cargo tracking to curb smuggling and revenue leakages. He added that the system will also align Nigeria’s ports operations with global best practices and improve the country’s ease of doing business ranking.
Importers and clearing agents welcomed the development, though some expressed concerns about initial adaptation challenges. Industry experts believe the automated system will drastically reduce corruption in port operations while boosting investor confidence in Nigeria’s maritime trade environment.
