The Federal Ministry of Education has clarified that the minimum age for entry into Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS1) remains 10 years, contrary to reports suggesting a new minimum of 12.
Describing the claim as “false and misleading,” Director of Press, Boriowo Folasade, urged media organisations to verify information before publication.
“The minimum age for JSS1 remains 10. No child should finish primary school before that age,” the statement read.
The ministry also reiterated that the university entry age remains 16 years, citing the need for cognitive and emotional readiness. It warned that unverified claims could undermine public confidence in education policy.
