FEDERAL GOVERNMENT MEETS NLC LEADERSHIP OVER TARIFF PROTEST

In a bid to prevent the planned nationwide protest on February 4 against the 50% telecom tariff hike, the Federal Government has summoned the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and its civil society allies for urgent talks today. The meeting, set for 5 p.m., will focus on the justification for the telecom tariff adjustment, as well as the NLC’s strong opposition to the ₦8 billion allocated for electricity bill sensitization, which the union has criticized as wasteful.

Despite agreeing to attend the meeting, the NLC has made it clear that the protest will proceed, with demonstrations starting at 7:00 a.m. on February 4. Protesters will march to National Communications Commission (NCC) offices and State Houses of Assembly, submitting petitions against the tariff hike. NLC leaders have emphasized that this protest is a response to the growing economic hardship faced by Nigerian workers and citizens. They remain firm in their opposition to the tariff increase, stating that their fight is for the greater good of the nation’s populace.
