The Federal Government has unveiled plans to establish a national aircraft leasing company aimed at supporting domestic airlines and reducing their dependence on foreign lessors.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed the initiative during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abuja, noting that the project will enhance Nigeria’s aviation competitiveness and help local operators cut costs on aircraft acquisition and leasing.
He explained that the proposed company, to be managed through a public-private partnership framework, will serve as a financial backbone for Nigerian carriers struggling to meet international leasing obligations.
Keyamo added that the government is also reviewing policies to attract investment in aviation infrastructure, improve safety compliance, and expand Nigeria’s maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capacity.
The move is expected to reduce capital flight, create jobs, and boost confidence in the Nigerian aviation industry.
