FEDERAL GOVERNMENT URGES ASUU TO DROP PLANS FOR STRIKE, BUT TOO LATE, SAYS UNION

The Federal Government has appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to suspend its threat to strike over unpaid obligations and stalled renegotiated agreements — but ASUU says the appeal is too late, as its members have already mobilized for industrial action.

In a letter to the union leadership, the government offered to resume stalled negotiation steps and hinted at payment of certain arrears. However, ASUU rejected the plea on grounds that trust has broken down and that previous promises were broken multiple times.

The union’s leadership issued fresh communiqués instructing university branches to prepare for strike actions starting October 10, citing unresolved welfare, infrastructure, and funding demands. University administrators have warned of a potential academic calendar collapse if the strike proceeds.

Stakeholders continue to urge both sides to return to the table immediately, lest students suffer further disruptions.
