Federal Govt Kicks Off CNG Project in Akwa Ibom

In a major step toward cleaner energy solutions, the Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, has flagged off the construction of a 10-million standard cubic feet per day (10MMSCF/D) Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) project in Esit Eket, Akwa Ibom State.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Minister highlighted the project as part of the Federal Government’s “Renewed Hope Initiative” aimed at reducing dependence on petrol and promoting affordable energy alternatives.

“This is a game-changer for Akwa Ibom’s economy. It will reduce reliance on expensive petrol, create jobs, and attract further investments,” Ekpo said.

He disclosed that over N200 billion had already been invested in the gas sector, with an additional N400 billion set for injection in the coming months.

Urging local investors to take advantage of the initiative, the Minister stressed the need for strong community support, assuring that the project would drastically lower energy costs once completed.

“This facility will make gas more accessible and significantly cut fuel costs, ensuring a cleaner and more affordable energy source for Nigerians,” he added.

Chairman/CEO of Nsik Oil and Gas, Nsikan Johnny, commended the government for its support, emphasizing the project’s potential to transform transportation, industries, and domestic energy use.

The CNG station, designed to serve multiple states including Rivers, Delta, Cross River, and parts of Abia, will operate with four compressors and supply gas via specialized tube trailers.

Community leaders pledged their cooperation, promising to provide a peaceful environment for the project’s smooth execution.
