The Federal Government has issued a flood alert across 15 states and 69 vulnerable communities as heavy rainfall continues nationwide.
The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, in collaboration with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), warned that swollen rivers, poor drainage systems, and climate change factors could lead to flash floods in parts of northern, central, and southern Nigeria.
Communities in states such as Kogi, Anambra, Bayelsa, Delta, Adamawa, Taraba, and Kebbi were listed as high risk. Citizens in flood-prone areas have been advised to relocate to safer grounds, while state governments were urged to prepare emergency shelters.
Experts say the recurring floods underscore Nigeria’s weak disaster preparedness infrastructure. They argue that until long-term solutions such as modern drainage systems, dam management, and climate adaptation strategies are prioritized, the country will continue to face devastating annual floods.
