FG SETS 2026 DEADLINE FOR ABUJA-KEFFI ROAD COMPLETION
The Federal Government has announced a new completion target of June 2026 for the long-delayed Abuja-Keffi dual carriageway, a critical road project aimed at easing one of the most congested transport corridors in Nigeria. During a recent inspection, Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, expressed satisfaction with the project’s current 42% progress and emphasized that the Tinubu administration is committed to ensuring the timely disbursement of funds for all certified works — irrespective of budget delays or fiscal constraints.
The project, awarded to China Harbour Engineering Company Nigeria Ltd, stretches from the Abuja interchange through Mararaba to Keffi and forms a vital economic artery connecting Abuja to Port Harcourt and the South-East through Nasarawa, Benue, and Enugu States. Goronyo praised the contractor’s performance and pledged that the government would avoid bureaucratic bottlenecks to ensure the project is delivered as scheduled.
Yakubu Usman, Federal Controller of Works for the FCT, outlined several key challenges slowing progress. These include the dense traffic volume in Mararaba, especially from Abuja-bound motorists, the need for public cooperation, and delays in relocating high-tension electric poles — particularly in the Keffi area. He noted that scope revisions have been approved and the contractor is now focused on completing the Keffi-bound carriageway first. The project is expected to significantly reduce travel time, boost commercial transport, and enhance safety for millions of commuters in the North-Central corridor.
