The Federal Government has launched a strategic partnership to promote local innovation through public procurement by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) and the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI).
At the heart of the MoU is a directive mandating all federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to prioritize locally manufactured products from NASENI in their procurement processes.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, BPP Director-General Dr. Adebowale Adedokun described the move as a game-changer that would shift Nigeria from an import-reliant economy to one that invests in its own intellectual and manufacturing capabilities. “We are linking the innovation pipeline directly to procurement opportunities, turning invention into development,” he stated.
NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, disclosed that the agency has developed more than 50 market-ready products, spanning agriculture, energy, defense, and ICT. He also noted that NASENI has attracted over $2 billion in foreign investment in the past 12 months alone.
This procurement policy, aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s industrialization agenda, is expected to create thousands of jobs, reduce dependency on foreign technology, and drive inclusive economic growth.
