Gov Okpebholo says Government uninformed about Foreign Delegates’ visit to Edo Museum

The Edo State Government has confirmed that it was not briefed in advance about a visit by foreign delegates to the Museum of West African Arts (MOWAA) in Benin City. Governor Monday Okpebholo clarified that the delegation’s arrival occurred without coordination with the relevant state authorities, raising concerns about protocol adherence and the handling of public heritage assets.

State officials noted that while the government remains committed to promoting Edo’s cultural heritage internationally, any foreign engagements or diplomatic visits must align with state regulations and security guidelines. The incident follows ongoing controversies surrounding the MOWAA site, which has previously been the subject of disputes over land use and ownership.

Authorities have directed a review of all recent foreign engagements at state-managed sites, with a view to ensuring transparency, safeguarding assets, and preventing similar oversights. The state government emphasised that moving forward, any international visits will require prior approval to align with Edo’s broader cultural, economic, and security objectives.
