Governor Umo Eno has intensified efforts to unlock the blue economy as part of his ARISE Agenda, ensuring sustainable ocean resource utilization for economic growth, job creation, and environmental preservation.
Recognizing that the ocean economy accounts for approximately 2.5% of global GDP and is projected to outpace the global economy in the next 15 years, the Governor has prioritized maritime development and youth employment in Akwa Ibom’s coastal communities.
A key milestone in this effort is the flag-off of maritime infrastructure development in Oron, a major aquatic trade hub. The project, expected to be completed in September 2025, includes a ferry terminal and leisure resort, a modern terminal building for passengers and cargo, warehouses and cold storage facilities to support the fishing industry, a cargo and ferry jetty, a Maritime Joint Task Force Outpost to improve security, a boat repair workshop, and a floating bar and beachfront entertainment area.
Speaking at the project’s flag-off, Governor Umo Eno reaffirmed his commitment to fulfilling financial obligations to the contractor and announced that the Nigerian Navy will train 15 engineers for maintenance.
The Governor also expressed his desire to take the ferry to Calabar and back once the project is completed, emphasizing that the initiative will revive maritime trade and boost local employment. The Oron Maritime Hub is expected to create over 1,000 daily jobs, curb rural-urban migration, and enhance Akwa Ibom’s participation in export markets.
