INEC Chairman appoints Chief Press Secretary

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, has appointed veteran journalist and former Punch editor, Adedayo Oketola, as his Chief Press Secretary (CPS).

The appointment, announced in a statement by the Commission’s Director of Public Affairs, is part of efforts to strengthen INEC’s communication and transparency strategy under the new leadership.

Oketola, an award-winning investigative journalist with over two decades of newsroom experience, previously served as an editor at The Punch and held key editorial positions that shaped national discourse on governance, economy, and elections.

According to the statement, Oketola’s appointment reflects the Commission’s recognition of the critical role the media plays in fostering credibility and restoring public trust in electoral management.

Observers have hailed the appointment as timely, coming at a moment when INEC faces the task of rebuilding confidence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
