INEC CHAIRMAN WARNS: FUTURE ELECTIONS DEPEND ON CONTINUED LEGAL REFORMS

As Nigeria looks toward future elections, INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu has urged lawmakers to commit to continuous electoral reforms to safeguard democratic integrity.
Speaking at a retreat in Lagos alongside members of the Joint National Assembly Committee on Electoral Matters, Yakubu praised past collaborations that produced the landmark Electoral Act 2022 but warned that significant gaps remain.
Among the urgent issues he highlighted were strengthening the legal foundation for technological innovations like electronic voting, reducing the avalanche of election-related court cases, and enshrining recommendations from previous reform panels.
Yakubu noted major achievements since 2022, such as Nigeria’s first-ever complete domestic printing of sensitive election materials and improved election logistics, but stressed that resting on past successes would be dangerous.
He concluded by reminding stakeholders that deep, proactive legislative work — not crisis-driven reforms — would be key to building voter trust and ensuring credible elections in Africa’s largest democracy.
