Former Senate Chief Whip, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, has called for a constitutional amendment to introduce a single, non-renewable six-year term for presidents and governors in Nigeria.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the lawmaker argued that the current two-term structure encourages waste, divisiveness, and unnecessary political tension.
Kalu said the single-term model would allow leaders to focus on governance rather than reelection campaigns, which often consume state resources and derail development.
According to him, the proposal will also promote national unity, reduce corruption linked to electoral manipulation, and save billions spent on recurrent elections.
“I believe six years is enough for any serious leader to deliver results. What Nigeria needs now is stable, focused leadership and reduced political distractions,” Kalu said.
He urged the National Assembly to initiate wide consultations with stakeholders across the six geopolitical zones to ensure broad consensus before the amendment process begins.
