The Kano Emirate has lost its oldest and most revered kingmaker, Galadiman Kano, Abbas Sanusi, who passed away at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness. His death marks the end of an era for the emirate, where he served diligently for over six decades.
Born in 1933, Abbas Sanusi was the uncle of the current Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II. His path in the traditional institution was charted early by his father, Emir Sanusi I, who appointed him as Sarkin Dawakin Tsakar Gida and District Head of Ungogo in 1959. Over the years, he climbed the ranks, serving as Dan Iyan Kano under Emir Muhammadu Inuwa and later as Wambai of Kano under the late Emir Ado Bayero. His most prestigious title, Galadiman Kano, was conferred upon him by his nephew, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, solidifying his status as a pillar of the emirate’s leadership.
Aside from his role in traditional governance, Abbas Sanusi was also a political figure, as the father of Abdullahi Abbas, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State.
His funeral prayer is set to take place at the Emir’s Palace, Kofar Kudu, Kano, at 10 AM on Wednesday, April 2, with dignitaries and well-wishers expected to pay their last respects.
