The Katsina State Government has earmarked ₦19.89 billion for renewable energy projects aimed at reducing dependence on the overstretched national grid and boosting access to electricity in key sectors.
Dr. Hafiz Ibrahim Ahmed, the Special Adviser to Governor Dikko Radda on Power and Energy, revealed that the state intends to rehabilitate the 10 MW Lambar Rimi Wind Farm through a Special Purpose Vehicle model, ensuring transparency and sustainability. He added that the government will secure structured Power Purchase Agreements to guarantee long-term returns and efficiency.
Beyond wind power, the state is investing heavily in solar energy. According to Ahmed, 20.1 MWp of solar photovoltaic systems, combined with 10.1 MWh battery storage, will be installed across 11 state institutions. These include hospitals, universities, secondary schools, water treatment plants, high courts, the state legislature, and government offices. The plan is expected to deliver reliable electricity supply to facilities that currently suffer frequent blackouts.
The Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) has endorsed the project’s outline business case, describing it as visionary and a model for subnational governments seeking to transition into renewable energy. Experts believe the project could make Katsina a leader in Nigeria’s renewable energy space and provide a blueprint for other states facing electricity shortages.
