Madagascar prepares switch in power: New Army ruler to be Sworn in as Rajoelina confirms Exit

Madagascar’s political crisis took a decisive turn on Thursday as President Andry Rajoelina confirmed his resignation and the military’s top commander, General Richard Rakotonirina, was named interim ruler ahead of a formal swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Friday, October 17th.

The announcement followed days of escalating protests and political maneuvering after the dissolution of Parliament earlier this week. Rajoelina’s departure ends months of turmoil over disputed reforms and allegations of corruption within his administration.

According to a statement from the Malagasy Armed Forces, the temporary transition led by Rakotonirina aims to “restore stability, maintain order, and prepare the ground for free and fair elections.” The general, known for his loyalty to the state, pledged to uphold the constitution and ensure a peaceful transition.

International observers have expressed cautious optimism but remain wary of possible military overreach. The African Union has called for restraint and urged authorities to respect democratic principles, while France and the United States have encouraged dialogue between all political stakeholders.

In Antananarivo, citizens expressed mixed reactions — some welcoming the military’s intervention as a stabilizing force, others fearing it could entrench authoritarianism. Madagascar, one of Africa’s poorest nations, now faces an uncertain future as it grapples with deep political divisions, economic stagnation, and the aftereffects of years of governance instability.
