MARYAM ABACHA BREAKS SILENCE, DEFENDS LATE HUSBAND’S LEGACY

Maryam Abacha, widow of the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has publicly rejected long-standing allegations that her husband looted Nigeria’s treasury, arguing that no credible evidence has ever been presented. In an emotional interview with TVC, Mrs. Abacha challenged Nigerians to reconsider the basis of their accusations.
“Did anyone see the signature? Did anyone see the money stashed away?” she queried. She argued that any funds allegedly hidden were intended for national use and disappeared after her husband’s death.
She lamented the continued vilification of her husband nearly 27 years after his death, describing the scrutiny as either tribal or religiously motivated. “Why do we keep blaming each other like this?” she asked.
Criticizing the media for perpetuating negative narratives, she said, “Twenty-seven years on, and you’re still talking about Abacha. He must have been powerful and deeply loved.”
Mrs. Abacha also emphasized national unity, calling for a stop to tribal and religious divisions. “Abacha, Babangida, Abiola—they are not bigger than Nigeria. We all matter,” she said.
