Popular Nigerian activist and entertainer Debo Adebayo, widely known as Mr Macaroni, has vowed that the memories of the 2020 #EndSARS protests and their tragic aftermath will never be forgotten.
Marking the fifth anniversary of the Lekki Toll Gate shooting on Sunday, October 20, 2025, Mr Macaroni took to social media to reaffirm his commitment to justice for victims of police brutality, saying that young Nigerians must continue to demand accountability.
“We will never forget October 20, 2020. We will never forgive those who killed innocent Nigerians and those who continue to shield them. We owe it to the dead and to the living to keep speaking the truth,” he wrote.
He recounted his personal experience of being arrested and brutalized during the protests, insisting that the youth movement remains a turning point in Nigeria’s struggle for accountability and civic rights.
Other activists and celebrities, including Falz, Rinu Oduala, and Deji Adeyanju, also joined the remembrance, organizing peaceful walks and online tributes in Lagos, Abuja, and other cities.
Civil society groups used the anniversary to renew calls for justice, noting that no security official has been held responsible for the killings despite the findings of the Lagos Judicial Panel of Inquiry.
Mr Macaroni added that the #EndSARS protests should remind the government that “power belongs to the people” and that “citizens’ voices cannot be silenced forever.”
