The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has defended Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, from recent attempts to link him to defamation-related arrests in Kaduna State, calling such moves politically motivated and “reckless.”
In a statement signed by its Senate President, Usman Adamu Nagwaza (Don Manu), NANS declared that its independent fact-finding found “no connection whatsoever” between the Speaker and the legal actions surrounding alleged defamatory posts tied to business transactions in Zaria.
NANS warned against weaponising social media, stating that unverified accusations can destroy reputations and undermine the rule of law. The student body reaffirmed its stance on free speech but cautioned against misinformation and incitement.
The group issued a four-point advisory calling on civil society and the media to uphold responsible engagement, verify facts before publishing, and allow legal processes to run their course without interference.
