NATIONAL ASSEMBLY RESUMES JULY PLENARY WITH FOCUS ON EDUCATION, HEALTH, AND SECURITY

The Nigerian National Assembly resumed its plenary session on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, with a full agenda spanning critical national issues including education reforms, healthcare improvement, infrastructural investment, and pressing security matters. The live proceedings, broadcast on the NASS TV YouTube channel, provided citizens a direct view into the workings of the legislature as the Senate and House of Representatives tackled fresh motions, petitions, and bills.
Presiding officers in both chambers opened the day’s business with a call to order followed by the adoption of the previous plenary’s minutes. The atmosphere was focused yet energetic, as lawmakers returned from the Sallah break to address a backlog of legislative matters that had accumulated during the recess.
In the House of Representatives, matters of urgent public importance dominated the early hours. Several lawmakers raised concerns over the worsening insecurity in some northern states, calling on security agencies to intensify surveillance and community-based intelligence operations. Others moved motions targeting youth empowerment through technical education, job creation, and intervention programs, particularly in rural constituencies.
In the Senate, debate was largely centered on infrastructural challenges, with emphasis on road rehabilitation across major federal highways and the need for sustained funding for health centers in underserved regions. A motion was also raised regarding the outbreak of cholera in parts of Lagos and Ogun States, prompting calls for emergency public health funding and mass sensitization efforts by the Federal Ministry of Health.
Legislators also began consideration of new bills aimed at enhancing regulatory frameworks in the mining sector, improving student loan administration, and expanding access to broadband infrastructure across schools and rural communities. Committee reports on education, public accounts, and national security were presented and committed to further legislative scrutiny.
Tuesday’s session marked the beginning of a crucial legislative month, as the National Assembly prepares to finalize several bills ahead of the annual recess in August. Lawmakers emphasized their readiness to work closely with ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) to ensure effective budget implementation and policy oversight.
As public interest in governance continues to grow, the July 1 plenary reaffirms the legislature’s commitment to transparency and responsive governance, with both chambers pledging to intensify efforts in addressing the socio-economic needs of Nigerians.
