NFF DISOWNS CRITICAL MATCH REPORT SLAMMING DESSERS AND TROOST-EKONG

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has moved to douse tensions after a controversial match report published on its official website sparked outrage among players and supporters.

The article, released hours after Nigeria’s 1–1 draw with South Africa, singled out striker Cyriel Dessers as “too slow” and blamed captain William Troost-Ekong for the own goal that allowed the hosts back into the match. Fans quickly criticized the federation for publicly ridiculing its players, with some calling it a breach of professionalism and team unity.

In a swift reaction, NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi issued a statement distancing the federation from the comments, stressing that the report did not represent its official position. “The NFF holds every player of the Super Eagles in high regard. We regret the error and have commenced an internal review,” he said.

The incident has renewed conversations about the federation’s communications strategy and the professionalism of its media operations. Analysts argue that such careless publications risk damaging player morale at a crucial stage of World Cup qualifying.

Meanwhile, supporters of the affected players have called for greater accountability within the NFF, urging it to focus on solving pressing issues such as unpaid bonuses and logistics rather than fueling public controversies.
