Nigeria’s Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, has demanded an immediate retraction and public apology from United States President Donald Trump over his recent comments threatening possible military action against Nigeria.
Barau, in a statement released through his media office, described Trump’s remarks as “reckless, undiplomatic, and deeply disrespectful to Nigeria’s sovereignty.” He said no country should be subjected to intimidation under the guise of foreign policy, especially from a nation that claims to champion democracy.
The Deputy Senate President maintained that Nigeria remains an independent nation governed by its constitution, and that any foreign interference in its internal security or governance decisions would not be tolerated.
He further urged the Federal Government to summon the U.S. ambassador to Nigeria for clarification on Trump’s statements, stressing that such comments could strain long-standing bilateral relations between both nations.
Barau called on the international community to discourage political aggression and preserve mutual respect between sovereign states, reiterating that Nigeria will not bow to threats.
