Nnamdi Kanu Files New Suits Against FG Over Detection

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has launched fresh legal actions against the Federal Government, citing persistent violations of his constitutional rights.

In a statement on Thursday,7th March, Kanu’s lawyer, Aloy Ejimakor, revealed that two separate suits had been filed before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to enforce due process in his ongoing case.

The first suit (CV/875/25) seeks to uphold Kanu’s right to a fair trial and, in the alternative, demands his unconditional release. The second (M/3224/2025) is an application for a writ of mandamus, compelling authorities to conduct his trial in accordance with the law, including a transfer of the case to the Southeast, where his legal team argues it should have been originally filed.

Ejimakor described the legal action as necessary due to “several unconstitutional and unlawful actions,” including the delayed reassignment of his case after Justice Binta Murtala-Nyako recused herself in September 2024. He also criticized the controversial return of the case to the same judge and the failure to commence a trial within a reasonable time.

Kanu has remained in detention for nearly four years, with his legal battle continuing to spark debates over judicial independence, human rights, and political interference in Nigeria’s legal system.
