NORTHERN LEADERS DISCUSS FORMATION OF NEW MEGA PARTY FOR 2027 ELECTIONS

In political developments, sources confirm that northern political leaders, along with key stakeholders from across the country, are exploring the creation of a new mega party to challenge the dominance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general election. Investigations by the Nigerian Tribune revealed that these leaders have largely concluded that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is no longer viable as the main opposition force.

The ongoing deliberations have focused on forming a coalition of parties, which may include the Social Democratic Party (SDP), with a goal of offering a strong challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s reelection bid. The committee tasked with finalizing the new party’s formation is expected to announce the vehicle for the opposition by late February 2025.

Sources indicate that several high-profile political figures are under consideration to lead the new coalition, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former governors Mallam Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna, and Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State, as well as Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. Some sources even suggest that former President Goodluck Jonathan could be a potential candidate.

While Atiku is seen as a leading figure, proponents of the coalition believe that it cannot succeed without the involvement of Peter Obi. Additionally, the role of the League of Northern Democrats (LND), led by former Kano State Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, is seen as central to bringing together various factions to form a unified opposition ahead of the 2027 race.
