NSCDC arrests 16 over illegal conveyance of solid minerals in Edo

The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested 16 suspects for allegedly transporting solid minerals without the required documentation.

State Commandant Akintayo Saidi Ayinla told journalists in Benin City that the arrests were made on Sunday, November 16, 2025, following credible intelligence. Six trucks loaded with suspected illegally mined Kyline Clay were intercepted along the Benin–Sapele Road, and nine occupants were arrested after failing to provide valid transport permits.

In a separate operation the same day, two more trucks were intercepted along Ogbemudia Farm on Auchi Road. Four suspects were detained for conveying lithium with unverifiable and unacceptable documents. Another suspect, Hassan Rufai, was arrested on November 15 while transporting suspected stolen items, including a solar battery, generator, plasma TV and inverter.

Ayinla described illegal mining as a major economic crime causing environmental degradation, revenue loss, and increased insecurity. He vowed that the command would intensify efforts to curb the illicit trade and ensure all suspects are prosecuted after investigations.
